Kazakhstan Appoints New Head for Water Management Institute
Kazakhstan's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has appointed a new head for the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Water Management. Serik Sairov, an expert in terrestrial hydrology, takes over from Nurlan Balgabayev, who will remain as a senior research fellow.
Sairov brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as the head of the Kazakh Research Institute of Water Management and first deputy director-general of Kazhydromet. His appointment was signed by Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
Sairov's expertise lies in hydrological modeling and water resource assessment. His brother, Mazhilis deputy Yerlan Sairov, confirmed the appointment but stated they have no professional connection. Family ties in government and quasi-public sector appointments are not uncommon in Kazakhstan, as seen in Yermek Kuantyev's appointment at Kazatomprom.
Serik Sairov's appointment signals a continuity of expertise at the institute, with the former head Nurlan Balgabayev staying on as a senior research fellow. The minister's decision to appoint Sairov highlights the importance of water management in Kazakhstan and the value of experienced professionals in the field.
