Kazakhstan & Azerbaijan Strengthen Ties: Sister City Agreement & Freight Restrictions Lifted
Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have strengthened their ties with a sister city agreement between Taraz and Qazax. During Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's state visit, restrictions on freight shipments to Armenia were lifted, and both leaders visited an AI center.
The sister city agreement, signed during Aliyev's visit, recognizes the historical connection between Taraz and Qazax. Qazax, Azerbaijan, is named after exiled Kazakh warriors who were settled there by Shah Ismail in the 16th century. The Kazakh Embassy announced the news on October 21.
Aliyev's visit also saw the lifting of restrictions on freight shipments to Armenia. The first cargo, a shipment of Kazakh grain, was sent under the new rules. Presidents Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Ilham Aliyev held bilateral negotiations and visited the Alem.ai International Artificial Intelligence Center during the visit. Tokayev personally saw Aliyev off at the airport after the visit.
The sister city agreement and the lifted restrictions on freight shipments mark a significant step in the relationship between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. These moves are expected to boost cultural exchange and trade between the two nations.
