Kazakhstan busts illegal logging ring exploiting forest permits
Authorities in Kazakhstan’s Kostanay Region have dismantled a criminal group, suspected of large-scale illegal logging and timber trafficking. The operation led to the detention of 20 individuals, including ringleaders and loggers, after months of investigation into their activities. The group allegedly used a legally obtained forest management permit to hide widespread deforestation. Witness testimonies and gathered evidence confirmed their involvement in an organised scheme, focusing on harvesting pine timber, which was then sold through controlled distribution networks. The case remains under investigation as officials piece together the group’s activities. If convicted, the suspects could face charges related to illegal logging, timber trafficking, and fraudulent use of permits. The outcome may also lead to stricter oversight of forest management in the region.
