Kazakhstan court jails father for 16 years in daughter's brutal assault case

A court in Kazakhstan has sentenced a 40-year-old man to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting his 14-year-old daughter. The ruling follows stricter laws introduced after high-profile cases of sexual violence in recent years. The victim initially struggled to maintain her testimony due to trauma before the case proceeded to trial.

The assault took place during a weekend visit to the father's home. After reporting the crime, the girl later asked to withdraw her statement, citing emotional distress. Despite this, prosecutors moved forward with the case, reclassifying the offence as sexual intercourse involving violence against a minor.

The defendant consistently denied the charges. However, forensic evidence led to his conviction. Under Kazakhstan's updated criminal code, penalties for such crimes were tightened in 2021—following a wave of public outrage over similar cases. Since then, sentences for rape and child abuse have risen sharply, with minimum terms of 12 years and mandatory registration for offenders.

The court handed down a 16-year prison term in a medium-security facility. This verdict aligns with the country's recent push for harsher punishments, reflected in over 500 annual convictions for comparable offences since the legal reforms.

The sentence reflects Kazakhstan's stricter approach to sexual violence cases since 2021. Convictions now carry heavier penalties, including longer prison terms and lifetime offender registration. The ruling also highlights the challenges victims face in maintaining testimony during legal proceedings.
