Kazakhstan fines man for hiding Russian dual citizenship at border checkpoint
A man was recently fined in Kazakhstan for failing to inform authorities about his dual citizenship. The incident took place at the Urlyutobe checkpoint, where he was discovered to hold both Kazakh and Russian passports. The man, a Russian citizen, was tried in Kazakhstan’s Zhelezinsky District Court for violating citizenship laws. He had failed to notify Kazakh authorities after obtaining his Russian citizenship, as required by law. The court fined him for breaching Part 2 of Article 496 of the Administrative Code. After a 30% reduction, the fine amounted to 275,240 tenge. The defendant admitted his guilt and revealed his intention to surrender his Kazakh documents at the consulate in Omsk. This was to be done after he accessed his pension funds in Kazakhstan. The man's failure to inform Kazakh authorities about his dual citizenship led to a fine. He now plans to comply with the law by surrendering his Kazakh documents after managing his pension funds.
