Kazakhstan overhauls hotel star ratings to boost tourism quality
Kazakhstan is revamping its hotel star-rating system to align with current international standards. The Ministry of Tourism and Sport will now oversee accommodation classification, replacing outdated 2008 rules. Officials aim to enhance service quality and draw more visitors to the country.
The existing system has seen limited engagement, with only 112 of 4,442 registered hotels holding an official star rating as of September 2025. Many facilities bypassed classification due to absent appeals processes, irregular criteria updates, and lax compliance checks.
The updated classification process will broaden the ministry's oversight and implement stricter, internationally recognized standards. With clearer rules and improved enforcement, the system is designed to elevate service quality and make Kazakhstan a more attractive tourist destination.
