Kazakhstan Proposes New UN Water Body to Tackle Global Crisis
Kazakhstan has put forward plans to create a new United Nations body focused on global water management. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed the idea during a speech in Astana last year. The initiative aims to bring together existing UN water-related agencies under one organization.
The proposal was first introduced in 2023 when Tokayev called for international consultations on forming a specialized UN water body. He argued that such an organization would align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The president also stressed that it would serve the interests of countries worldwide.
The summit in April will mark the start of official talks on the new UN water body. If approved, the organization would centralize existing mandates to improve global water governance. Kazakhstan’s push for the initiative reflects growing concerns over water security and sustainability.
