Kazakhstan secures historic IAEA membership in Far East regional group
Kazakhstan has joined the IAEA’s Far East regional group after a key decision at the agency’s General Assembly. The move, announced on October 14, 2025, marks a significant shift in the country’s role within the international nuclear watchdog. Officials have described the action as a step toward restoring equal representation among member states.
The IAEA General Assembly passed resolution GC/RES/15, formally admitting Kazakhstan to the Far East regional group. This inclusion allows the country to take part fully in the agency’s governing bodies for the first time.
With its new status, Kazakhstan can now engage more directly in the IAEA’s decision-making processes. The country’s participation is set to bolster its influence in shaping policies on nuclear safety and non-proliferation. This development follows years of diplomatic efforts to secure a more balanced regional presence within the agency.
