Kazakhstan slashes red tape for small businesses in bold reform push

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has ordered a major review of support policies for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The government must now submit proposals by April 1 to create a unified digital ecosystem for entrepreneurs. This move follows ongoing efforts to ease administrative burdens and boost economic resilience through business growth. Small and microbusinesses will soon face fewer bureaucratic hurdles. Until January 1, 2026, they will be exempt from most inspections, desk audits, and administrative fines under updated tax rules. Exceptions will apply only in specific cases, giving entrepreneurs more room to operate without constant oversight.

The push for reform comes as entrepreneurs continue to play a key role in the economy. They drive regional development, launch new projects, and generate jobs, contributing heavily to both local and national growth. Supporting these businesses remains a top priority for government policy at all levels. A shift toward digital regulation is also on the horizon. Plans to integrate blockchain and artificial intelligence could streamline processes, cutting red tape for business owners. The goal is to make compliance simpler while maintaining oversight. The author, a three-term deputy and chair of the Commission on Energy Efficiency, Housing and Utilities, Construction, and Ecology, has seen these challenges firsthand. Their experience highlights the need for long-term strategies that strengthen SMBs, ensuring a more stable and self-sufficient economy.

The new measures aim to create a more supportive environment for entrepreneurs. By reducing inspections and embracing digital tools, the government hopes to ease administrative pressures. The outcome could mean more jobs, stronger economic activity, and greater stability for citizens across the country.
