Kazakhstan smashes gold theft ring in daring Akbakai mine raid
Authorities in Kazakhstan have dismantled an organised criminal group involved in large-scale gold theft. The operation targeted illegal activities at the Akbakai mining and processing plant in Zhambyl Region. Several arrests were made, with investigations now focusing on the extent of the damage caused. A group of suspects was detained after attempting to steal gold-bearing material from the Akbakai plant. During the operation, officers seized weapons, a significant amount of cash, communication devices, and multiple vehicles. The detentions followed an investigation into the illegal extraction, processing, and theft of gold ore linked to the facility.
Over 12 tons of gold-bearing material have been recovered from illicit circulation. The case has since been referred to the courts, with security personnel and plant employees under scrutiny for potential involvement. This crackdown forms part of broader efforts to combat illegal mining across the republic.
More than 1,400 individuals have faced charges in recent years for gold theft and unauthorised mining operations. Authorities have implemented stricter measures to reduce the shadow trade in gold and prevent further unlawful activities. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has pledged to maintain law and order across all sectors. Investigations into the financial and operational impact of the illegal activities remain ongoing. The case highlights the government’s continued push to eliminate organised crime in the mining industry.
