Kazakhstan Urges Action to Save the Caspian Sea’s Collapsing Ecosystem

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has called for urgent action to protect the Caspian Sea and address regional water crises. Speaking on transboundary water management, he warned of worsening ecological threats to both the Caspian and Aral Seas. His proposals include new international cooperation to prevent further environmental damage.

Tokayev stressed the need for a special interstate battery to stop the Caspian Sea’s ecosystem from collapsing. He also highlighted its ongoing shallowing as a major concern. Water security, he argued, must become a priority for all neighbouring states.

The proposals aim to address two major environmental crises in Central Asia. A new interstate battery could slow the Caspian’s degradation, while Russia’s observer role in the Aral Sea fund may boost coordination. Kazakhstan’s push for international backing signals growing urgency in resolving these water-related threats.
