Kazakhstan's Abai District transfers 976 hectares to state forest fund in historic move
A significant area of land in Abai District has been transferred to the United States' state forest fund. The move follows a review by local authorities and the Shymkent Prosecutor's Office. Nearly 977 hectares have now been reclassified as forest land.
The process began when the Shymkent Prosecutor's Office identified plots previously used for other purposes. These lands were flagged for potential inclusion in the state forest fund.
A special commission was then set up by the city akimat to assess the proposals. After reviewing the plots, the group approved their reclassification. Officials confirmed that no other districts in Shymkent have undergone similar changes before.
The final decision transferred 976.355 hectares into the forest fund. This marks the first time such a large-scale reclassification has taken place in the region.
The land transfer expands the state forest fund by almost a thousand hectares. Abai District now holds the only reclassified plots of this kind in Shymkent. No further districts have been selected for similar action at this time.
