Kazakhstan’s deputy defense minister ousted amid corruption probe
Serik Burambayev, a high-ranking military officer in Kazakhstan, has been removed from his position as deputy defense minister. The dismissal follows a criminal investigation into allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
Burambayev’s career in the military began with a steady rise through the ranks. In 2021, he was promoted to major general. By 2025, he had reached the rank of vice admiral and was serving as commander of Kazakhstan’s Naval Forces.
His appointment as deputy defense minister came in August 2025. The role placed him in a key position within the country’s military leadership. Recently, he addressed journalists in the Mazhilis, discussing legal methods for avoiding conscription.
The dismissal was announced by Kazakh authorities in December 2025. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the order after the investigation into Burambayev’s conduct came to light. Officials have not yet disclosed further details about the specific charges or evidence involved.
Burambayev’s removal marks a significant development in Kazakhstan’s defense ministry. The investigation into his alleged misconduct will determine any further legal consequences. His departure leaves a vacancy in the ministry’s leadership structure.
