Keller Re-elected Mayor of Düsseldorf Despite Green Party's Provocative Campaign
Stephan Keller, the incumbent mayor of Düsseldorf, has been re-elected despite a contentious campaign by the Greens. Keller, who previously led a black-green coalition, is now considering alternative city council alliances, including a partnership with the FDP besides the Greens, or even a coalition with the SPD and FDP.
Keller's re-election comes despite the Greens' provocative campaign tactics in the final phase. They staged a debate with an empty chair to represent Keller, who declined to participate. However, Düsseldorf residents endorsed Keller's proposed program, which prioritises strong economic policy, support for young families and seniors, increased housing construction, and enhanced security.
In response to his victory, Keller expressed dissatisfaction with the Greens' campaign methods, stating that they had created a 'handicap' for future city council coalition talks. Meanwhile, the Green candidate, Clara Gerlach, extended her congratulations to Keller and recognised the substantial support she received from Düsseldorf voters.
With Keller's re-election, the political landscape in Düsseldorf is set to evolve. Keller's consideration of alternative coalitions, including the SPD and FDP, suggests a shift in the city's political dynamics. The Greens' campaign tactics, while controversial, have not deterred residents from endorsing Keller's policy proposals.
