Kelowna’s $1M Plan to Light Up Its Bridge Sparks Heated Debate
Kelowna is exploring plans to light up the W.A.C. Bennett Bridge, transforming it into a striking visual centrepiece for the city. The project, estimated at around $1 million, would give Kelowna a feature similar to the CN Tower or illuminated waterfalls. However, not everyone supports the idea.
The proposal aims to turn the floating bridge into a nighttime attraction visible across Okanagan Lake. But the city council has yet to give the green light.
A final decision will come during budget talks in early December. Local government officials will weigh the costs and benefits before committing funds. Some residents and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation argue that the money could be better spent on essential services or more pressing projects.
The debate highlights differing views on how the city should allocate resources. While supporters see the lighting as a way to boost tourism and civic pride, critics question whether it’s a worthwhile investment at this time.
The fate of the bridge lighting now rests with Kelowna’s city council. If approved, the project would move forward in 2025, with the bridge becoming a lit-up feature by late next year. The outcome will depend on whether officials prioritise the initiative over other spending demands.
