Kenyan Priest Shot Dead: Bishop Calls for Justice, Warns of Electoral Disputes
Father Allios Bett, a Catholic priest, was tragically shot dead by suspected bandits on May 22 in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya. The incident occurred shortly after he had led a mass. Bishop Dominick Kimengich has since spoken out about the murder and the ongoing issue of electoral disputes in the country.
Bishop Kimengich addressed the congregation during a memorial mass for the late Bishop Cornelius Korir at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Uasin Gishu County. He warned of the dangers of electoral disputes, reminding Kenyans of the country's past conflicts. He criticised the authorities for their lack of transparency, stating they had not informed the public about the motives behind Father Bett's death.
The Bishop called on the state to swiftly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. He also urged the congregation to continue promoting peace and unity, and to reject leaders who foster division among communities. In a separate matter, Bishop Kimengich condemned the Tanzanian government for ignoring the voices of its citizens.
Father Allios Bett's murder remains unsolved, with no arrests made so far. Bishop Dominick Kimengich has urged the authorities to expedite investigations and ensure justice is served. Meanwhile, he has called on Kenyans to remain united and peaceful, particularly in the context of upcoming elections.
