Kenyan teachers begin mass shift to Social Health Authority coverage

Over 400,000 teachers and their dependents began switching from AON Minet to the Social Health Authority (SHA) on December 1, 2025. The shift marks a major change in how educators access medical cover, but concerns remain about the process.

The transition kicked off with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and SHA officials overseeing the first day at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). By 10 am, 42 teachers had successfully moved to the new scheme at KNH, with 249 more registered nationwide.

The migration from AON Minet to SHA is now underway, with officials closely monitoring progress. While early numbers show some success, ongoing technical problems and teacher scepticism highlight the need for further adjustments. The full impact of the switch will become clearer as more educators complete the process.
