Kenya’s IGRTC wins top African award for empowering local communities
Kenya’s Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC) has won a major award for its work in strengthening local governance. The Prix d'Excellence du Leadership Local (PELL) was presented at a high-profile forum in Senegal. Over 700 entries from across Africa competed for the honour.
The award recognises IGRTC’s role in advancing devolution and citizen participation in Kenya. Its submission focused on progress made since the 2010 repeal of the Local Government Act, highlighting how communities now shape decision-making. CEO Kipkurui Chepkwony stressed the committee’s efforts in improving intergovernmental relations, resolving disputes, and sharing knowledge to support devolved systems.
The PELL Award aligns with the African Charter on Decentralization, promoting inclusive governance and local empowerment. IGRTC’s win highlights Kenya’s growing reputation in participatory democracy. The committee’s work will continue to shape how communities engage with government decisions.
