Kerstin Krieglstein re-elected as Freiburg University's rector for a second term
Kerstin Krieglstein will continue as rector of the University of Freiburg after winning re-election on 18 March 2026. Both the Senate and the University Council supported her appointment for a second term. Her new six-year term begins on 1 October 2026 and runs until 30 September 2032. During her first term, Krieglstein launched major initiatives to modernise the university. One key project was the Zukunftsagenda UFR 2040, a participatory strategy that shaped the institution's future direction. This agenda guided the university's successful bid for the Future Research University – Sparking Change That Matters excellence strategy.
The agenda also introduced Projekt4D, a programme focused on digital teaching and learning. It expanded online education formats and encouraged interdisciplinary research linking science with societal challenges. International partnerships were strengthened to promote academic freedom and security, while students gained more opportunities to develop cross-disciplinary skills.
Beyond digital transformation, Krieglstein's leadership addressed serious institutional issues. The university is working with external experts to handle cases of sexualised violence involving a former employee. New protective measures and support systems for affected individuals are being implemented.
Looking ahead, the university will focus on research, global collaboration, and adapting to technological and societal shifts. These efforts aim to reinforce Freiburg's position as a leading academic institution. Krieglstein's reappointment ensures continuity in the university's strategic development. Her priorities include advancing research, improving digital education, and tackling institutional challenges. The next six years will build on the foundations laid by the Zukunftsagenda UFR 2040 and related initiatives.
