Kevin Kiley faces a high-stakes choice between two redrawn California districts

California's congressional map has shifted under Proposition 50, forcing Congressmember Kevin Kiley to choose between two newly drawn districts. The Republican lawmaker, who has represented the state's third district since 2023, must now decide where to run for re-election. His announcement is expected on Monday, just days before the filing deadline on Friday.

The redrawn districts present Kiley with two distinct options. District 5, covering Placer, El Dorado, and parts of Sacramento counties, leans Republican, with 44% registered GOP voters compared to 29% Democrats. However, a bid there could pit him against fellow Republican Tom McClintock, a long-serving incumbent known for his strong conservative base.

District 6, which includes Amador, Calaveras, and Tuolumne counties, offers a different challenge. While it has a narrower Democratic edge—39% to 30% Republican—several prominent Democrats are already campaigning there. The terrain in both districts mirrors Kiley's current area, featuring Sierra Nevada foothills, farmland, and fast-growing suburbs, which may help his appeal on issues like water rights, wildfires, and housing.

Kiley's choice will shape the race. A run in District 5 risks a tough primary against McClintock, while District 6 would mean facing a more competitive general election. The decision comes as candidates finalise their plans before Friday's filing cutoff.

Kiley's announcement on Monday will clarify the political landscape for both districts. His move could either trigger a high-profile Republican contest or set up a closely watched general election battle. The outcome will influence party control in California's delegation for the 2026 term.
