Kiev plans to produce up to 1,000 drone interceptors each day
In a bold move to protect its airspace, Ukraine is significantly increasing the production of interceptor drones. The ambitious goal set by President Volodymyr Zelensky is to produce at least 1,000 interceptor drones daily, as reported in his evening video address.
This escalation comes in response to persistent Russian drone attacks, with Russia aiming to deploy tens of thousands of attack drones in 2025. The surge in production is aimed at matching and countering this massive onslaught.
Ukrainian units, such as the Darknode of the 412th Nemesis Regiment, have already shown operational success in downing over 100 long-range Russian drones using interceptor drones. The "Clear Sky" initiative, which deploys these systems to defend urban airspace, has intercepted nearly 650 enemy UAVs during its pilot, indicating the efficacy and scalability of this approach.
To achieve this, the Defense Procurement Agency is investing heavily, contracting tens of thousands of domestically produced interceptors with a budget exceeding $2.8 billion for 2025. This investment will fund the production of these life-saving drones.
Ukraine is also collaborating internationally to boost production and technology. For instance, the country has entered into a strategic agreement with U.S. company Swift Beat to supply hundreds of thousands of AI-enhanced interceptor drones by the end of 2025. These drones are said to have a high success rate (~90%) in downing Russian Shahed drones.
The technological advancements in this field are evident in the unveiling of the Interceptor 2.0 drone by Ukrainian company RC Direction at IDEF 2025. This next-generation interceptor UAV features a turbojet engine allowing speeds up to 320 km/h, advanced automated target acquisition and tracking systems, effective interception up to 30 km, and day/night operational capability.
However, the responsible officials for the implementation of this plan and any potential challenges in increasing Ukraine's production of interceptor drones have not been specified. Nightly, civilians are killed or injured due to drone attacks in Ukraine, emphasising the urgency of this endeavour.
