Kim Jong-un Welcomes Medvedev to Pyongyang, Vows to Strengthen North Korea-Russia Alliance
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has welcomed Russian Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, to Pyongyang. Medvedev's visit coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea, and both leaders have expressed their desire to strengthen the alliance between their nations.
Kim Jong-un met with Medvedev on October 9, 2024, to discuss issues of mutual concern. This meeting comes after Kim's earlier assurance to Russian President Vladimir Putin that their alliance would continue to grow stronger in the future. During their talks, Kim expressed his hope to further develop the alliance between North Korea and Russia, and to foster steady cooperation and exchange between their respective parties.
The joint statement released by the Workers' Party of Korea expressed 'firm support' for North Korea's measures to bolster its defense capabilities. Medvedev, in turn, praised the 'bravery and self-sacrificing spirit' of North Korean troops, highlighting their contribution in the Ukraine war alongside Russian forces. Kim Jong-un views Medvedev's visit as an opportunity to elevate the DPRK-Russia relations to a strong and comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance.
Medvedev's visit to North Korea is part of a series of celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea. Other foreign guests, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Vietnam's leader To Lam, have also been invited to attend these events. With both leaders expressing their desire to strengthen ties, the future of DPRK-Russia relations looks set to grow even closer.
