Kim Jong-un’s 2025 public appearances hit a seven-year high amid diplomatic push

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made 131 public appearances in 2025, marking his highest number since 2016. This increase continues a trend of growing visibility that began in 2020, reflecting a more active role in both domestic and international affairs.

Throughout 2025, Kim Jong-un’s schedule included a mix of domestic and diplomatic engagements. He attended 30 public ceremonies, conducted 23 on-site inspections, and participated in 21 military-related events. His diplomatic activities were particularly notable, as he made his first multilateral debut and held five rounds of summit talks with leaders from Russia, China, Laos, and Vietnam.

High-level foreign officials and emissaries met with Kim on 10 separate occasions. Within North Korea, he was frequently accompanied by senior figures. Jo Yong-won, a party secretary, was the most regular presence at his side, though Pak Jong-chon, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, joined him on 19 occasions. Defense Minister No Kwang-chol was also a frequent companion, appearing with Kim 11 times. The year’s engagements suggest a deliberate effort to strengthen both internal leadership and external relations. While the exact frequency of appearances with certain officials remains unclear due to limited records, the overall rise in activity signals a shift in Kim Jong-un’s public approach.

Kim Jong-un’s 2025 schedule highlights a significant increase in both domestic and international engagement. With more public appearances than in any year since 2016, his activities point to a more prominent role on the global stage. The mix of military, political, and diplomatic events underscores a year of heightened visibility and outreach.
