Klaus von Trotha, architect of Baden-Württemberg’s education reforms, dies at 87

Klaus von Trotha, the former science minister of Baden-Württemberg, has died at the age of 87. His influence on higher education in southwestern Germany spanned nearly a decade before he left office in 2001. Colleagues and political figures have since reflected on his lasting impact.

Von Trotha’s political journey began in Konstanz, where he led the local CDU district and served on the district council. In 1976, he was elected to the state parliament, eventually joining Minister-President Erwin Teufel’s cabinet in 1991 as science minister.

Von Trotha’s legacy remains visible in Baden-Württemberg’s academic institutions. His reforms and leadership shaped higher education policies that endure today. The state continues to recognize his role in fostering its reputation for educational quality.
