Koblenz Faces a Year of Major Construction in 2026

The city of Koblenz is gearing up for a year of extensive construction work. According to local authorities, 2026 will see a wide range of projects—from new bridges and road renovations to the modernization of schools, daycare centers, and parks. "I am delighted that we can improve Koblenz's infrastructure through construction every year, allowing residents to see that we are actively investing in our city," said Professor Dr. Andreas Lukas, the city's head of construction.

New Bridges and Road Upgrades

One of the most visible projects is the reconstruction of the Pfaffendorf Bridge. The central section is set to be installed in mid-2026, marking a key milestone. Traffic is expected to be rerouted onto the new bridge in the second half of 2027.

Major work is also underway on Mainzer Straße. In addition to the bridge replacement—scheduled to begin in October 2026 and last until 2029—the roadway, traffic lights, and bike lanes will be renewed, requiring temporary full closures.

In the Rauental district, road expansion on Behringstraße will start in May 2026, including the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection with Moselweißer and Blücherstraße. Nearby, progress continues on a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the railway tracks to the Goldgrube district, set for completion by late 2026. Meanwhile, work on the new pedestrian and bike path along the Horchheim railway bridge will be finalized.

Millions Invested in Schools, Daycare, and Sports Facilities

The city is also upgrading its educational infrastructure. Both the Clemens-Brentano/Overberg Realschule Plus and the Goethe-Realschule Plus will receive three-story extensions with cafeterias and specialized classrooms. A major milestone is the near-completion of an eight-group daycare center in Goldgrube, which will provide 180 childcare spots.

Under the "Municipal Investment Program for Climate Protection and Innovation" (KIPKI), two additional projects are moving forward: The Görres Gymnasium will receive an eco-friendly geothermal heating system and a solar power installation, while the Rappelkiste daycare in Güls will get a shaded structure with integrated photovoltaics. Both are expected to be finished by August 2026.

The historic Stadttheater, a listed building, will soon reopen after extensive technical and fire safety upgrades. Planning is also underway for the modernization of the 50-meter pool at Oberwerth outdoor swimming complex, with completion slated for 2030. Construction of a new multi-purpose building on Schmitzers Wiese will begin later this year.

More Green Spaces and Improved Public Areas

Several projects aim to enhance the city's livability. In the Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, the iconic riverside balcony will be extended by about two meters toward the Rhine to preserve mature trees, while the riverside path will be further expanded. The next phase of the Südallee's complete renovation is also set to begin.

Neighborhoods will see changes too: The market square in Güls will be greened, Bubenheim will gain a new village center, and construction of the riverside park in Lützel will start. Playgrounds in Lay, Moselweiß, and Rübenach will receive new equipment. A historic milestone will be celebrated on May 9, 2026, with the ceremonial opening of the Feste Franz fortress under the motto "Franz, We Celebrate!"

Councilor Lukas asked for patience regarding the upcoming disruptions: "2026 will be a year of extensive construction. Let's look forward together to the improvements in our city, even if they naturally come with temporary inconveniences."
