Kolkata Knight Riders’ Mustafizur Rahman signing sparks political backlash
Kolkata Knight Riders’ recent acquisition of Bangladeshi bowler Mustafizur Rahman for Rs 9.20 crore has sparked controversy. The move was criticized by spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur, who targeted both the franchise and its co-owner Shah Rukh Khan. Debate has grown over Rahman’s inclusion amid reports of violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh.
Rahman made history as the most expensive Bangladeshi player ever in the IPL auction. The left-arm seamer, who has previously represented five different franchises, has taken 65 wickets in 60 matches. His experience and skill set made him a sought-after pick for Kolkata.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not intervened in the matter. A source within the board confirmed that decisions on foreign players lie outside their jurisdiction. They also stated no government communication had been received regarding Bangladeshi participants. Political figures from various parties have stressed that sports should stay free from political and diplomatic disputes. However, no official statements from leaders on this specific issue have emerged in recent days. The BCCI has also not issued any restrictions on Bangladeshi cricketers playing in the league.
The signing of Rahman remains in place, with no formal objections from authorities. Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision stands, while discussions about the separation of sports and politics continue. The franchise will proceed with their plans for the upcoming season.
