Komi Marks 25 Years of Justice of the Peace System Shaping Local Courts
A ceremonial event took place at the State Council of Komi on December 12 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Russia’s justice of the peace system. The region was one of the first to reintroduce this legal framework, with local officials playing a pivotal role in its launch. Today, the system handles the vast majority of cases in Komi, from minor offenses to complex disputes.
The justice of the peace system was revived in Komi in September 2000, when the first ten judges were appointed. Many of these original judges continue to serve the region today. Vyacheslav Shishkin was instrumental in establishing the system, which aimed to bring courts closer to residents and simplify access to justice.
The justice of the peace system has become a cornerstone of Komi’s legal infrastructure, processing a wide range of cases efficiently. With its continued operation, the region maintains a judicial model designed to serve the public directly. The recent awards highlight the dedication of those who have upheld the system for decades.
