Komi’s new mayors take office after rigorous year-long leadership trials

Four new mayors have taken office in Komi after a year-long evaluation process. Rostislav Goldshtein, the region’s leader, tested his team before making the final appointments. The selections were based on performance rather than connections or status.

In 2023, Goldshtein began assessing his administration’s effectiveness. He monitored officials in action for 12 months, focusing on measurable results. Only those who proved their competence were considered for leadership roles.

Maxim Martyshin was chosen as mayor of Syktyvkar, the region’s capital. Marina Metelyova took charge in Ukhta, while Igor Guryev became mayor of Vorkuta. Galina Pletser was also re-elected as head of Ust-Vym District.

Gennady Levitsky, a regional spokesperson, called these appointments the last step in forming a professional management team. The officials selected had all delivered clear achievements by 2025.

The new mayors and district head now begin their terms with a focus on proven ability. Their appointments follow a structured evaluation, ensuring leadership roles went to those with a track record of success. The process marks a shift toward performance-based governance in Komi.
