Kornblum’s 98.6% renomination sets bold vision for Braunschweig’s future

Dr. Thorsten Kornblum has been overwhelmingly renominated as the SPD’s lead candidate for Braunschweig’s 2023 mayoral election. He secured 98.6% of the vote, confirming strong support within his party. His campaign now focuses on shaping the city’s future by addressing climate change and social cohesion.

Kornblum’s political influence extends beyond local boundaries. Federal Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Lower Saxony’s Minister-President Olaf Lies—both SPD members—highlighted his impact on regional and national discussions. Their endorsement underscores his role in bridging local concerns with broader political decisions.

His vision for Braunschweig centres on three key goals by its 1000th anniversary in 2031: a socially united community, a safe environment, and a thriving economy. To achieve this, he plans decisive action on climate change while keeping residents’ daily needs at the forefront. At the same time, he intends to maintain the SPD’s dominance in city politics, working closely with the party’s council group to stay the strongest political force in the party city.

Kornblum also aims to leverage his position to advocate for Braunschweig’s interests at state and federal levels. This dual approach—local leadership paired with wider political engagement—defines his strategy for the upcoming election and beyond.

With nearly unanimous backing from his party, Kornblum enters the race with clear priorities. His plans include ambitious climate measures, economic growth, and stronger representation for Braunschweig in higher government. The election will determine whether his vision aligns with voters’ expectations for the city’s next chapter.
