Kotoka International Airport should be renamed Ghana Airport - Richard Sumah
Richard Sumah, Deputy General Secretary of the United Party, has urged Ghana to rename Kotoka International Airport. He suggests calling it Ghana International Airport instead. According to him, the current name ignores the country’s complex history linked to the overthrow of its first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Sumah first proposed renaming the airport in February 2021, initially suggesting it honour former leader Jerry John Rawlings. Now, he argues for a neutral name free from political ties. Speaking on GHOne Today with Serwaa Amihere on December 22, he stressed that national institutions should avoid names connected to divisive historical events.
Frequent renaming of public institutions based on changing political regimes weakens national unity, Sumah claimed. He believes a simple, non-political name would better represent Ghana’s identity and prevent future disputes. To push for the change, he has called on Members of Parliament to introduce a private member’s bill.
The proposed name, Ghana International Airport, aims to remove political associations from the country’s main gateway. Sumah’s appeal follows years of debate over the airport’s current name and its historical implications. If successful, the change would mark a shift toward more inclusive naming conventions for national landmarks.
