Krems Primary School stays put after months of uncertainty and negotiations
Krems Practice Primary School will remain at its current location after months of uncertainty. The decision follows a letter of intent signed by local authorities and the Diocese of St. Pölten. Parents and staff have welcomed the news as a major relief.
The school’s future had been in doubt since the Church Pedagogical University (KPH) announced its move to St. Pölten. This relocation left the site’s purpose unclear, raising concerns about potential closure or displacement. Negotiations between Lower Austria and the diocese then focused on repurposing the land for a healthcare and nursing training centre.
Despite the planned changes, the Archdiocese of Vienna’s University Foundation will keep its role as the school’s maintaining authority. Construction work will require temporary relocation within the school grounds, but operations will return to the same site afterward.
Florian-Alexander König, chair of the parents’ association, described the outcome as a hard-won victory. While acknowledging that adjustments will be needed, he emphasised the group’s optimism about the school’s long-term stability.
The agreement ensures the school remains open, though construction will bring short-term changes. Parents and officials now look ahead to the next steps, including coordination with the new landowner. The training centre project will proceed alongside the school’s continued presence on the site.
