Kretschmann's Final Visit: Strengthening Cross-Border Ties with France and Switzerland

Baden-Württemberg's Minister President, Winfried Kretschmann, is on a visit to France and Switzerland, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with neighboring countries, especially in times of geopolitical instability. This trip, which may be his last as head of government, focuses on strengthening ties in various sectors, including defense, aerospace, and research.

Kretschmann kicked off his visit in the French region of Grand Est. He toured the University of Strasbourg's European center for quantum research, highlighting the importance of collaborative scientific efforts. The Minister President also visited the Hartmannswillerkopf memorial in Alsace, paying tribute to the victims of World War I and underscoring the shared history and culture between the two countries.

Trade and economic cooperation were also high on the agenda. Kretschmann discussed the significant trade volumes with key partners like China and the United States. France, with its 180-kilometer border and 60,000 daily commuters, plays a crucial role in Baden-Württemberg's economy, with imports worth nearly 18 billion euros in 2024. Switzerland, the second most important trading partner, was also a key focus of the trip.

Kretschmann met with regional politicians, companies, and research centers to explore cooperation in defense industry, aerospace, and artificial intelligence. He believes that only through such cooperation can the region compete globally and secure Europe's future.

Kretschmann's visit underscores the enduring importance of cross-border cooperation for Baden-Württemberg. With trade ties to France and Switzerland worth billions of euros and a shared commitment to research and defense, the region's future is intrinsically linked to its neighbors. As Kretschmann's tenure as head of government draws to a close, his final trips emphasize the need for continued dialogue and collaboration.
