Kuwait's Sheikh Jarrah Calls for UN Reform at Security Council Debate
Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, leading Kuwait's delegation, addressed the UN Security Council's open debate on 'The United Nations: Reflections on the Future'. He acknowledged global conflicts' persistence despite UN achievements and called for stronger adherence to international law and UN Charter principles.
Sheikh Jarrah praised the UN's past accomplishments, including the development of international law, promotion of sustainable development, and successful peacekeeping operations. He highlighted the Security Council's role in Kuwait's 1991 liberation as a testament to the UN's ability to uphold justice and legitimacy.
Looking ahead, Sheikh Jarrah identified three key pillars for the UN's future: structural reform, bolstering preventive diplomacy, and safeguarding the UN Charter's integrity. He emphasized the urgent need to reform the UN system, particularly the Security Council, to build a fairer, more peaceful, and cooperative world.
Sheikh Jarrah concluded by reaffirming Kuwait's steadfast belief in multilateralism and the UN's mission. He urged all member states to renew their commitment to the UN's founding principles, ensuring a stronger, more effective organization for the future.
