Labour's Ambitious Plan to Tackle Youth Unemployment by 2040

Labour's ambitious plans to tackle youth unemployment and support those facing barriers to work have been outlined. The party aims to double the number of young people on apprenticeships or technical courses by 2040 and has invested over £1 billion in the Connect-to-Work scheme.

The scheme, led by Labour, offers personalised local support to thousands of people facing complex barriers to work. Employers will receive National Insurance relief for hiring under-21s, encouraging more job opportunities for young people. Since Labour entered office, over 700,000 people have moved into jobs, but economic inactivity remains higher than before the pandemic.

Labour's Youth Hubs programme provides tailored support for young people to enter the jobs market. Almost one million young people are not earning or learning, a situation Labour aims to address with its Youth Guarantee. This initiative will offer work to young people on Universal Credit for 18 months. Sir Charlie Mayfield's independent review is also underway, exploring how the government and employers can better support disabled people and those at risk of falling out of work.

Labour's commitment to reshaping the work and welfare landscape is evident in its initiatives. With over £1 billion invested in the Connect-to-Work scheme and ambitious targets for apprenticeships and youth employment, the party is working to create a dynamic and inclusive labour market.
