Langen Strengthens Historic Old Navy Town with New Preservation Rules
Langen is taking steps to better protect its historic Old Navy Town. The city plans to introduce a new news preservation statute to strengthen existing rules. Officials say the current 1980 ordinance no longer provides enough safeguards for the area’s heritage. The Old Navy Town has kept much of its original character, with half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries still standing. Its medieval layout and fortifications remain largely intact, alongside two protected historic districts and numerous individual landmarks. Yet, the city’s 1980 Old Navy Town Ordinance now leaves gaps in preservation efforts. If approved, the new news statute will work alongside the 1980 ordinance to tighten preservation rules. The goal is to ensure that future changes respect the Old Navy Town’s historic fabric. The city council’s upcoming vote will determine whether the proposal moves forward.
