TAP Air Portugal Introduces Enhanced Cabins on A321neo Aircraft
TAP Air Portugal has unveiled an updated cabin design for its A321neo aircraft, aiming to improve the passenger experience during air travel. The new Airspace cabin configuration, first implemented on TAP Air Portugal's A321neo aircraft, is a response to passenger frustrations related to carry-on storage.
The Airspace cabin design features larger overhead lockers, allowing for 60% more luggage. Specifically, the A321neo aircraft can now accommodate 194 pieces of luggage in overhead compartments, an increase from the previous 8 pieces. The new overhead lockers allow for vertical loading of bags, making it easier for passengers to access and store carry-on luggage.
Of the 20 new aircraft, TAP Air Portugal plans to have ten A320neo and ten A321neo aircraft with the Airspace cabin configuration. The A320neo aircraft can now hold 130 pieces of luggage in overhead compartments, an increase from the previous capacity.
The new cabins also emphasize clean lines and interfaces accessible to all customers, representing a shift towards more inclusive aircraft interiors. They are equipped with larger lavatories equipped with Braille signage, making the cabin more accommodating for visually impaired passengers.
All seats in the new cabins include both USB-A and USB-C charging ports, ensuring passengers can keep their devices powered throughout their journey. The customisable LED ambient lighting adapts to different phases of flight, creating a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
TAP Air Portugal operates one of the world's youngest fleets, consisting entirely of Airbus next-generation NEO aircraft including A320neo, A321neo, A321LR, and A330neo models, alongside 19 Embraer regional aircraft. The first TAP Air Portugal aircraft equipped with the updated Airspace cabin configuration was the Airbus A321neo named 'António Sérgio,' and its first commercial flight between Lisbon and Warsaw took place on September 12, 2025.
By 2029, TAP Air Portugal plans to integrate 20 new aircraft with the Airspace cabin configuration. The A321neo aircraft carries 221 passengers across Business, Economy Extra, and Economy classes. The Airspace cabin design is a significant step forward in TAP Air Portugal's commitment to providing a comfortable and convenient travel experience for its passengers.
