Last WWII Hero of Yakutia: Pyotr Yakovlev’s Legacy of Bravery and Service
Pyotr Konstantinovich Yakovlev, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War and the war against militarist Japan, has passed away. Born in Suntar District, Yakutia, Yakovlev served his country with distinction, earning numerous awards and accolades.
Yakovlev's military career began in June 1944 when he was conscripted into the army. He served as a mortar operator, demonstrating bravery and valor that earned him the Medal 'For Combat Merit'. His service also included participation in the liberation of Manchuria from Japanese forces as part of the 16th and 39th Armies.
After the war, Yakovlev graduated from Leningrad University. He went on to hold various positions within the Yakut Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic, including leading the Party Committee of the Elgei State Farm and serving as an instructor in the organizational department of the Council of Ministers of the Yakut ASSR. He also worked in the Suntar District Education Department and held senior positions in the District Committee of the CPSU.
Yakovlev's contributions were recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class, two Orders of the Badge of Honor, the 'Civil Valor' distinction, and an Honored Worker of the National Economy of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). Even in advanced age, he remained socially active, serving as a member of the City Council of Veterans. He was also an Honorary Citizen of Suntar District and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
