Latvia to Cut Aid to Ukrainian Refugees in 2026

Latvia plans to trim assistance to Ukrainian refugees next year. The reduction comes as the number of Ukrainians seeking temporary protection remains high, straining the state budget. The Latvian government has approved a plan to decrease aid to Ukrainian migrants, from €65 million to €40 million in 2026. This reduction follows a strain on the state budget, with over 600 Ukrainian citizens applying for social benefits each month. Ukrainian citizens in Latvia will face several changes: they will no longer be exempt from medical service fees, and will lose their right to free public transport. Additionally, they will no longer receive a one-time employment allowance. These changes aim to ease the burden on the Latvian budget. The Latvian authorities' plan to reduce aid to Ukrainian migrants will come into effect next year, including cuts to medical exemptions, free transport, and employment allowances. Despite these changes, the number of Ukrainians applying for temporary protection status remains high.
