Latvian voter fraud probe exposes ballot tampering in Cesis elections

A criminal investigation has uncovered voter manipulation during last year's local elections in Cesis Municipality. The State Police launched proceedings on election day after reports of a suspect influencing voters and tampering with ballots. The case has since been taken over by the VDD due to its legal jurisdiction.

The suspect allegedly pressured several residents in a Cesis parish to vote for two specific candidates in the municipal council election. These candidates were not ultimately elected as deputies. On the day of the vote, the individual transported voters to the polling station and completed ballot papers on their behalf.

In one instance, the suspect accompanied a voter into the booth and directed their choice. The VDD is now pushing for charges, accusing the person of deliberately obstructing the free exercise of voting rights.

The State Police first opened criminal proceedings against the suspect on June 7th, the date of the election. No further individuals have been identified in connection with the case at this time.

The VDD's investigation remains ongoing, with a focus on the suspect's actions during the election. If charged, the case could set a precedent for handling voter interference in future polls. The outcome may also affect how local authorities monitor polling stations in Cesis Municipality.
