Lavrov dismisses Baltic states’ role as Europe’s tensions escalate with new border crackdowns
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has sparked controversy with his recent remarks on the Baltic countries' role in Europe's security. Meanwhile, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has proposed stricter border controls.
Lavrov believes that the Baltic states - Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia - are being given too much importance by the West. He thinks fewer Europeans understand their actual role in Europe's security landscape. Lavrov also suggests that the British and NATO have assigned provocative roles to these countries, implying that their significance is overestimated.
In response to Russia's actions near its borders, Lithuanian President Nauseda has proposed restricting transit to Russia's Kaliningrad Region and shutting down the border with Belarus indefinitely. This move comes as a countermeasure to Russia's perceived provocations.
Lavrov's comments have drawn criticism, with many viewing them as an attempt to downplay the importance of the Baltic countries in Europe's security architecture. Meanwhile, Lithuania's proposed border restrictions aim to strengthen its security in the face of growing tensions with Russia.
