Lead Pipe Replacement Projects Stalled as States Await Trump Funds

Several states, including New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Hawaii, have yet to access funds allocated under the Trump administration's $3 billion program for lead water pipe removal and replacement. This delay is causing setbacks in crucial infrastructure projects aimed at protecting citizens from lead exposure.

States with a high number of lead pipes, such as Wisconsin, Michigan, and Massachusetts, are facing construction delays due to these funding issues. The 2021 infrastructure law allocated $15 billion for nationwide lead pipe replacement, but nearly five months after the EPA's announcement, funds remain held up, typically distributed in the spring. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has confirmed that the delay has led to the pausing of lead service line replacement projects in her state.

The Trump administration is behind schedule in distributing the $3 billion allocated for lead pipe removal and replacement. States are experiencing delays in their construction schedules, which could potentially expose citizens to lead for longer periods. Swift resolution is needed to ensure the timely completion of these vital infrastructure projects.
