Air India Flight AI171 Crash: FAA Coordinates with NTSB for Possible Assistance
Liaising with NTSB over Air India aircraft incident
In the wake of the tragic Air India flight AI171 crash that took place on June 12, 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is reaching out to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to stay informed about the situation. While the Indian government is leading the investigation, the FAA has pledged to offer technical support should it be asked for.
The FAA officially declared, "We are in contact with the NTSB regarding Air India flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad (AMD) to London Gatwick (LGW), that was involved in an accident in India on Thursday, June 12. When an international incident occurs, that government leads the investigation. In the event assistance is requested, the NTSB is the official US representative and the FAA provides technical support. We stand ready to launch a team immediately in coordination with the NTSB."
Secretary of the US Department of Transportation, Sean Duffy, also expressed his condolences for the loss of lives and emphasized the importance of safety, "Our prayers are with the families who lost loved ones. As always, safety is paramount. That's why we're working with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to assist India in the investigation of the crash."
The NTSB has prepped a team of US investigators to travel to India and collaborate with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, should they be needed for the investigation.
Preliminary data have revealed that the aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, briefly reached 625 feet before plummeting at a steep 475 feet per minute. With a tragic death toll of 241 passengers and crew members and one survivor, the crash occurred shortly after departure from Ahmedabad Airport, heading to London Gatwick, and left debris scattered across a nearby residential area.
The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is spearheading the investigation, with potential collaboration from Boeing should they require assistance. Let's hope for a swift resolution and unveiling of the cause behind this devastating accident.
