Lithuania, Russia Clash Over Airspace Incursion
Tensions have risen between Lithuania and Russia following a reported incursion into Lithuanian airspace by Russian military aircraft. President Gitanas Nauseda has condemned the action, while the Russian Defense Ministry maintains it was a routine exercise.
The incident involved two Russian aircraft, a Su-30 fighter jet and an IL-78 tanker aircraft. Lithuania's Ministry of National Defence reported the violation near Kybartai, close to the border with Russia's Kaliningrad region.
The Russian Defense Ministry has responded, stating that the flights were part of scheduled training exercises over the Kaliningrad region, and no borders were violated. However, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an 'unacceptable violation' of Lithuanian airspace.
The incident has escalated tensions between the two nations, with Lithuania calling for an emergency meeting of NATO's military committee. Russia has not yet responded to Lithuania's allegations, maintaining that the flights were routine and within its own territory.
