A long-running dispute over Bamberg’s refugee reception centre has finally come to an end. The city and the Bavarian Interior Ministry reached an agreement after years of disagreement. The deal allows the facility to stay open longer while giving Bamberg new development opportunities.

The conflict centred on the 'Anker' reception centre, which opened in 2015. Originally, the site was meant to close by the end of 2025. But the city and state could not agree on its future.

Bamberg had pushed for the 2025 shutdown but later compromised. In exchange for extending operations, the city will now buy the property from the federal government. It will then lease the land back to the state for continued use.

Under the new terms, the centre will remain open for another decade, until around 2035. Second Mayor Jonas Glüsenkamp played a key role in brokering the solution. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) welcomed the outcome, calling it a 'strong signal' for regional cooperation.

The agreement also brings benefits for both sides. Bamberg secures long-term control over the site for future urban planning. Meanwhile, the state gains certainty for refugee accommodation needs.

The resolution ends years of tension between Bamberg and the Bavarian government. The centre will continue operating until 2035, while the city gains ownership of the land. Officials have described the compromise as a balanced solution for all parties involved.
