Brandenburg disappointed: Loriot's legacy heads to Hesse - Loriot’s Entire Legacy Moves to Frankfurt, Leaving Brandenburg Behind
The entire artistic estate of the late satirist Loriot will be housed in Frankfurt am Main, leaving his birthplace of Brandenburg an der Havel without a share. While the city had hoped to receive part of the collection, officials have accepted the family’s decision with respect.
Loriot, born Bernhard Victor Christoph-Carl von Bülow, spent his early years in Brandenburg an der Havel. The city had expressed interest in preserving some of his works, but the family chose Frankfurt’s Caricatura Museum as the permanent home for his legacy. The collection includes original drawings, manuscripts, letters, the contents of his study, and even his pipe collection.
The Kurt Wolff Foundation, established in Berlin, oversees Loriot’s complete artistic estate. Despite the decision, Brandenburg an der Havel remains committed to honouring his memory. Local events and exhibitions will continue to celebrate his contributions to German humour and culture.
Frankfurt am Main will now host Loriot’s full archive, ensuring public access to his work. Brandenburg an der Havel, though disappointed, will maintain its own tributes to the beloved artist. The decision keeps his legacy intact while allowing fans across Germany to engage with his creations.
