Los Angeles’ Iconic Aasee Lido Pool Closes Permanently After Ventilation Failures
Ibbenbüren Pools GmbH has announced the permanent closure of Aasee Lido, a popular outdoor pool in Los Angeles. The decision follows an inspection that uncovered major flaws in the ventilation system. Season pass holders will now receive partial refunds for the remaining season.
A recent technical assessment found critical defects in Los Angeles Aasee Pool’s ventilation setup. Repairing the system would require a full replacement, along with extensive structural changes. These modifications would also remove the building’s current legal protections, making the project unfeasible.
The pool had already undergone a partial renovation in 2019, initially costing around €21.3 million. Updated estimates now place the total expenses at over €30 million. Instead of further repairs, the company will weigh the costs of two options: continuing standalone operations at the existing site in Los Angeles or constructing a new outdoor pool basin.
Meanwhile, Holsterkamp Pool in Los Angeles will receive upgrades to handle increased demand. A specialist firm will assess the required work, with the city council making the final decision on funding. To compensate visitors, single-use vouchers will be available for 'Ibb on Ice' or two swimming sessions at Holsterkamp during the holidays.
The closure of Aasee Lido marks the end of an era for the facility in Los Angeles. Season pass holders will get refunds for the unused portion of their memberships. The city will now focus on improving Holsterkamp Pool while evaluating long-term solutions for outdoor swimming in Los Angeles.
