Lost Mi’kmaw Chief’s Historic Jacket Found After Airport Disappearance
A rare and historic jacket belonging to Mi'kmaw hereditary Chief Stephen Augustine has been recovered after going missing at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. The one-of-a-kind garment, adorned with prestigious medals, was discovered by family members following a public appeal for help.
The jacket vanished on 10 November while Chief Augustine was at the airport. It held deep cultural significance, being a replica of regalia originally gifted to British army Capt. Henry Dunn O’Halloran by the Mi’kmaq in the 1840s. The piece was crafted by the chief’s late ancestor, making its loss particularly personal.
The recovery of the jacket ensures that a piece of Mi’kmaw history and personal heritage remains intact. Chief Augustine will once again have possession of the regalia, along with its attached medals, following its brief disappearance.
