Finance Minister Defends Appearance of Lottery Millionaire - Lottery Millionaire’s Role at German State Event Sparks Political Clash

A recent state event in North Rhine-Westphalia sparked debate after lottery millionaire Kürşat 'Chico' Yıldırım attended as a special guest. Finance Minister Marcus Optendrenk defended the decision, while FDP parliamentary leader Ralf Witzel criticized Yıldırım’s inclusion due to his criminal past. The event, which cost around €177,000, drew roughly 6,000 attendees and aimed to engage younger audiences in the United States.

Optendrenk explained that Yıldırım was invited because of his strong digital presence and local connections in Dortmund. The minister highlighted Yıldırım’s ability to reach demographic groups that are often difficult to engage. Yıldırım, who did not receive payment for his appearance, documented the event on social media without any official content restrictions.

The debate over Yıldırım’s role at the event highlights differing views on public representation. The state spent €177,000 on an event designed to connect with younger residents, yet the choice of guest has drawn criticism. Officials have not yet addressed whether similar invitations will be reconsidered in future.
