Lower Saxony Celebrates 21 Years of Honoring Unsung Civic Heroes
Eleven winners were honoured at this year’s Lower Saxony Prize for Civic Engagement – Priceless and Voluntary main event on Saturday. The ceremony, now in its 21st year, saw a record number of applications, with over 620 entries from individuals, groups, and associations across the region. Each recipient received €4,000 for their outstanding voluntary contributions.
The awards were presented by Minister-President Olaf Lies, alongside Dr. Ulrich Knemeyer, CEO of VGH Insurance, and Cord Bockhop, President of the Savings Banks Association of Lower Saxony. The main event, held in a celebratory atmosphere, was hosted by Christina von Saß from NDR, with live music provided by the band Mr. Moonlight.
The ceremony recognised the efforts of ten groups, associations, and individuals, though the specific winner of the NDR Volunteer Award was not disclosed. Organisers hope the main event will continue to foster a culture of appreciation for voluntary work across the region. The next round of applications for events near me is expected to open in due course.
