Lower Saxony Launches European Prize for Civic Engagement and Democracy

A new European Prize has been launched by the state government of Lower Saxony. The initiative aims to highlight local projects that champion European values and civic participation. Minister Melanie Walter officially announced the competition on Friday. The award invites applications from across the region, with cash prizes on offer. First place will receive €5,000, second €3,000, and third €1,000. A separate student category has also been introduced, encouraging young people to share their vision of democracy in Europe.

For the student competition, entries must take the form of a video. The theme, *‘Your Democracy – Show what democracy in Europe means to you in concrete terms,’* sets the focus. Winners in this category will be awarded €500 for first place, €300 for second, and €200 for third. The winners will be honoured at a ceremony on November 23. The event will take place at the Karriere Campus in Hanover.

Applications for the prize are now open. The competition seeks to inspire greater engagement with European ideals while rewarding innovative local efforts. Successful entries will be recognised at the upcoming ceremony in Hanover.
